Placement Opportunity: Business Change Support


West Yorkshire Police are offering a Business Change Support placement in the Force Performance Improvement Unit.

Who are we looking for?
We are looking for bright, highly energetic and motivated students for a 9-11 months placement with our Business Change Team based in Wakefield starting August / September 2016. The successful applicants for the position of Business Change Support Student will help in the delivery of a wide range of corporate and local business change projects supporting the delivery of Force strategic objectives to improve performance.

The Business Change Team are responsible for providing a professional analytical service to the Force, involving the application of specialist methods to help ensure business decisions are based on valid and useful evidence. We are looking particularly for students who are highly numerate and have modelling, statistical and computing skills as well as the confidence to work alongside police officers and civilian support staff on a day to day basis. The placement will involve undertaking research and analysis, preparing written reports and making presentations to leaders within the department and the wider Force.

Your placement details
West Yorkshire Police is the fourth largest Force in England and Wales with approximately 8,000 employees. Like most Forces, West Yorkshire Police has a requirement to make best use of its resources and identify more cost effective ways to deliver services. You will be joining the Business Change Team which directly supports specific Force performance improvement initiatives and also the force-wide Programme of Change which is seeking to deliver significant transformation in systems and structures across all areas of the Force. Many of the reviews within the Programme of Change require detailed analytical work and the application of Operational Research and business improvement tools, typically including: simulation modelling; mathematical modelling; lean; system dynamics; soft systems modelling and general systems thinking. As a student placement with us, you will be required to provide technical and consultancy support in these specialist areas.

Typical examples of the kind of work you may be involved in include:

  • Identifying the best location of scarce resource based on detailed modelling work
  • The review and redesign of existing force processes based on detailed research and robust analysis.
  • Building simulation models to help identify the number of resources required to meet the anticipated demand levels
  • Developing detailed business cases to justify changes in the way the Force operates
  • A cost / benefit assessment of the introduction of new technology such as in-vehicle mobile data systems.

This work provides an exciting opportunity to influence and directly contribute to making our communities safer and feel safer. It will also provide the student with an invaluable opportunity to gain practical experience of applying their skills within a large public sector organisation.

The placement will be based at the West Yorkshire Police HQ in Wakefield. You will also be expected to undertake work at other police and partner locations across West Yorkshire. Occasionally, you may be asked to work at other locations across England and Wales.

Any applicant must be able to pass the National Police Vetting requirements.

The gross rate of pay for a 3rd year student will be £17,361 per annum.
